Description:
This dynamic, hands-on workshop is designed for Pre-K to 2nd-grade teachers interested in creating a space for making and tinkering in their classrooms. Encouraging children to explore materials, ask questions, and tinker builds the skills they need to become creative problem solvers and innovative thinkers. In this session, educators will learn how to establish a makerspace that invites curiosity, experimentation, and discovery, helping students become confident in their ability to create and explore new ideas.
Participants will engage in a variety of STEAM-based activities focused on hands-on science, technology, engineering, art, and math. These activities will demonstrate how making and tinkering can promote imaginative thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration among young learners. Teachers will leave with practical strategies and resources to support early childhood development through playful exploration and engineering in action.
This workshop will empower teachers to cultivate a classroom culture where creativity thrives, and where students develop a passion for tinkering, making, and solving problems through playful learning.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the educational benefits of making and tinkering in fostering creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in young children.
- Design and organize a makerspace or creative exploration area that encourages hands-on learning, experimentation, and collaboration.
- Identify key STEAM concepts (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) that can be reinforced through making and tinkering activities.
- Implement at least three STEAM-based activities that engage students in exploring real-world engineering, building, and creating.
- Facilitate student inquiry and exploration by guiding them through the process of imagining, designing, testing, and refining their projects.
